The government of Ghana in collaboration with Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) is set construct a huge Stadium which will to match the standard of an Olympic Stadium. The project, which has about 50,000 capacity, will be built in light of the 2023 Africa Games in Ghana.
On Monday, 12th October 2020, a nine-member committee was inaugurated by President Akufo Addo at the Flagstaff house, to control the affairs of the organization of the multi-sport games held in Ghana in 2023.
The President of Ghana addressed the occasion by saying,
“Presently, none of the sports stadia in Ghana meets the required standard for continental games. It is thus necessary to construct appropriate sports facilities in the country that will be able to host the 25 sporting disciplines from the African Games.
“I’m happy to that land has been secured to construct the necessary facilities for the games and the procurement process to engage the contractor is ongoing,” President Akufo-Addo said during the inauguration of the LOC.
“The facilities to be constructed include a 50,000 capacity Olympic stadium complex, multi-purpose sports halls for all indoor sports, aquatic centers for swimming and tennis courts,”
The committee is chaired by veteran journalist and lecturer, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare and has Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) president Ben Nunoo Mensah, Reks Brobbey, an Olympian, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, adviser to the Minister of Youth & Sport, Ms. Eva Okyere, a legal practitioner, Dan Kweku Yeboah as members.
Dr. Owusu Ansah will serve as Chief Operating Officer and Reks Brobbey as Deputy Chief Operations Officer.
The stadium is budgeted to cost about $200 million and is located at Borteyman in the Greater Accra Region.
